How Producer Responsibility Works

At Recipo, we have the pleasure of working with producer responsibility in electronics, batteries and packaging throughout the Nordic region.

All companies that produce and sell electronics, batteries and packaging in Europe must contribute to covering the costs of collecting and recycling these products. By doing so, we help each other to strive towards a circular economy and reduce the risks of hazardous waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is producer responsibility?

Producer responsibility for electronics and batteries means that all companies that produce and sell electronics or batteries must contribute to covering the costs of collecting and recycling the products. Producer responsibility is based on an EU directive from 2005 and aims to contribute to increased sustainability.

How do I take my producer responsibility?

Register with us at Recipo and register your company with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the responsible authority. Then report your sales to us in our reporting portal, and we’ll take care of the rest.

What is the difference between consumer electrical equipment and professional electrical equipment?

Companies that sell electronics intended for use by private consumers, so-called consumer electrical equipment, must, according to producer responsibility, be connected to Recipo or another nationally approved collection system. Consumer electrical equipment includes all products that may be used in households, even if the sale takes place between companies.

Companies that sell so-called professional electrical equipment, electronics intended for use in companies and businesses, must report their sales statistics to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. This can be done by joining Recipo. These companies also need to achieve the recycling levels set out in the Regulation on Producer Responsibility for Electrical Equipment.

Am I covered by producer responsibility?

Your company is covered by producer responsibility for electronics and batteries if you put electronic products and batteries on the market in Denmark. This can include producers, importers, distributors, and retailers.

Producers – domestic producers who sell in Denmark
Importers – who put products on the market in Denmark
Retailers – who sell electronic products in Denmark that are produced abroad
Distributors – who sell products to stores in Denmark
International distributors – who sell to companies in Denamrk

How does store collection work?

Producer responsibility means that the companies covered need to offer retail collection of electronic waste from consumers. The amount of e-waste that each store is expected to handle is based on the one-on-one principle. That is, you are expected to handle the collection of as many kilograms or units of e-waste as you sell electronic products.
